![]() Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. So you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. How has this not been noticed by anybody at the company by now? The fact that I'm angry and disgusted with this is just an indicator of how spoiled I am by Apple's usual attention to detail when it comes to stuff like this, but still. As it transitions from the first track ("Speak To Me") into the second ("Breathe"), the volume suddenly drops by more than three db's, right in the middle of a note. Turn off any shuffle or sound-check features, and just play it from the beginning on any computer or device using the files pulled down from iTunes Match. For one of the most obvious examples I'm talking about which many of you probably have access to, have a listen to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". The problem with this is, when you are listening to a continuous-play album, there's an abrupt BUMP UP or DROP DOWN in volume when the music crosses from one track to the next. (By "compression", I'm talking about audio compression, which makes some music sound slightly louder by bringing the quietest part of the signal up to match the louder parts, not digital compression of the data.) When you rip a song to iTunes, they pull their copy from the iTunes Store library for your other devices, rather than upload your copy off the rip you made, and the songs in the iTunes Store are not always archived at the same level of volume and/or compression. My annual subscription is ending this week, and I'm totally going to re-up. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. If you'd like to view their content together, click here.
